Sanjay Dalal, founder & CEO, oGoing and his Immigration story

"Immigration policy should be generous; it should be fair; it should be flexible. With such a policy we can turn to the world, and to our own past, with clean hands and a clear conscience." ― John F. Kennedy, A Nation of Immigrants

For those of us who immigrated to USA, we have our unique stories to tell and share. We all came from different parts of the world in pursuit of higher education, better opportunities, greater freedom and the American Dream.

Here's the immigration story of Sanjay Dalal, founder & CEO of OGoing. Please share this story with your representative today. We need Congress to pass the Immigration reform act in 2014.

"My father, Bharat C. Dalal, and mother, Ashaben Dalal, inspired my sister Situ and me to come to this great country USA in Fall 1987 in search of the American Dream. My parents taught us early on to study and work hard, have a strong determination to succeed, and give back to the community.

The student days

My sister Situ and I started at the University of Oklahoma with just enough money to pay for our first semester's tuition, and lodging and boarding. I did well during my Freshman year at OU in 1987 (I secured the first place in Putnam Math competition, and was nominated for the President's award after securing a 4.0 GPA). I applied to the University of Texas at Austin for Electrical and Computer Engineering program for my sophomore year. When I was awarded the coveted Engineering scholarship (which also made me eligible for instate tuition), I transferred to my alma mater UT! I worked 20 hours weekly in the Macintosh computer laboratory to help students with their programming classes on the Mac, and help pay for my undergraduate education. I was later awarded the International Office scholarship in my senior year. I learned early on the value of great American college education earned through hard work, and am quite grateful to my professors and advisers at both UT and OU. (both my sister and I started at University of Oklahoma; she transferred to University of California, Irvine).

I met my wife to be, Mamta Kamdar in Austin in summer of 1989 (she's also an immigrant from India, and was in the Business School doing Accounting). We were both part of the Indian Orientation team and helped arriving students from India at UT Austin get settled-in. I also led as the Treasurer of India Student Association, and Secretary of Tau Beta Pi, Engineering Honors Society. I graduated from UT in May 1992. My wife and I got married on August 15, 1993, celebrating both our marriage and India's Independence Day in Orange County, California (yup, we lost our independence). I did my graduate school at Arizona State University - Phoenix and Tempe (Computer Science) while working at Bull HN in Advanced Engineering Program (Honeywell) from 1992 through 1995. I learned the building blocks of computer hardware and software design and market development. In 1995, we moved to Austin for a year and a half (when I worked at IBM as a software engineer).

We were blessed with our son; our son, after 18 years, is now in Austin again and studying at UT as a freshman in Aerospace Engineering. I am particularly proud of my son when he mentored young students coming from disadvantaged families for over 3 years through America On Track program.

An opportunity to work at a startup in Silicon Valley with my wife's brother-in-law drove us to California in 1997. Our beautiful daughter was born in Fremont in 2000 (she is a millennium baby!).

The journey of an entrepreneur begins

I became an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. In my product marketing and product management position at eComLive, I launched an innovative Whiteboard collaboration software product Visual Rendezvous that became the market leader in cross-platform collaboration. At WebEx, as a product manager and product director, I introduced two innovative web collaboration products, WebEx Training Center and WebEx Sales Center, that became market share leaders in their category generating millions of dollars in new business for WebEx (and providing the competitive edge in the marketplace). These software products are used by over 50 million people since launch. I also helped build the new products team at WebEx. In my role in strategic business development, I helped lead the first two mergers and acquisitions for WebEx, and participated in over 30 strategic partnerships with companies including Cisco, SAP, British Telecom, AT&T, Yahoo!, CoVisint, American Express, and more. WebEx was acquired by Cisco Systems for over $3 billion. After WebEx, I helped Educomp, the leading e-Learning company in India, with it's U.S. product launch and e-learning strategy. I also tried launching retail startups in Wireless and Tax solutions, and failed.

After spending 10 years in Silicon Valley from 1997 to 2007 and working at various startups (and doing well), we moved to Irvine, Orange County to settle down for the next 10 years (at the very least). I became a U.S. Citizen in 2008 to vote for the first time, and enjoy the freedom of a U.S. citizen! This was my proudest moment.

The next phase of entrepreneurship

My entrepreneurship journey went into overdrive mode in Irvine. I launched an investment firm at the height of the stock market boom in 2007 called Innovation Index Group and created the first of its kind Innovation Index Fund. When the stock markets crashed in 2008, I closed the company and the fund. Lessons learned.

I founded India USA Business Network, a platform for professionals to connect, collaborate & do business with Indian professionals worldwide and USA. Over 3,500 professionals and businesses used the network to connect and grow.

I launched, an innovation consulting firm for emerging businesses. I am the author of the Definitive Guide and Innovation eBook on Creativity And Innovation in Business, used by over 1,000 corporations and organizations around the world including HP, Pepsi, Hallmark, Cleveland Clinic, EDS, Ericsson, Best Buy, University of California, Irvine, Indian Institute of Sciences, LG Electronics, Nokia, J&J, TATA and many more. In 2006, I started my blog on Creativity and Innovation Driving Business, and that led to writing the eBook! I am humbled and grateful that so many leading organizations and universities have downloaded my eBook, and are using the key tenets to drive creativity and innovation at their business. My latest eBook on Apple & Steve Jobs - Apple's Innovation Strategy is also used by over 1,000 leading organizations. I recently launched WOW Product Guide - Creating Amazing Products for your customers NOW on As chief marketer of Semdia, I provided Internet marketing services to various small and growing businesses.

I am driven to create amazing customer value and experience with my latest start-up oGoing, nation's leading small business social network, and am working hard to make it the best platform for small business social networking, social media, local and mobile marketing! I launched oGoing from my garage at the height of the great recession in 2009. I have been "oGoing" ever since, and have now grown the network to over 10,000 professionals and small businesses.

What I am doing in the community?

I like to stay involved in local community activities. I was the board member of Asian Business Association of Orange County for three plus years, and President-Elect for 2012 - during my volunteer role, we inspired and educated over 2,500 small businesses in Orange County. I am an active member of OCTANe, TCVN and TiE So Cal, member of the Irvine Chamber of Commerce, and an active Rotarian - Rotary Club of Newport-Irvine. I am the current New Generations & Youth Services Director of my Rotary club helping inspire the next generation of student leaders in Orange County. I was the Secretary of School Site Council at Turtle Rock Elementary School & Treasurer of Turtle Rock Elementary School PTA . I was the Fine Master of Rotary Club of Newport-Irvine, and participated in Rotary community activities for Olive Crest, SnowBall Express, Senior Meals, Woodbridge High School annual run, UCI Rotaract, Uni High Interact, Irvine Senior & Youth Job Fairs, Camp Pendleton Marines & more. I mentored an aspiring young boy who wants to be an American Football star as part of America On Track Orange County MCP program, and mentor UC Irvine students building new startups. I also served as a Foundation committee member at Chinamaya Mission Los Angeles. In the past, I was a basketball coach for my son's teams (three times), art master for my daughter's class, and technology adviser for the entire Fremont school district. My wife and I also like to participate in philanthropy to the best of our ability. I believe in Non-violence, Peace, Kindness, Honesty, Humility, Not Hurting anyone, and active Community Service.

What I am passionate about?

I am passionate about my family, my work, community, education, innovation, culture and customs of people worldwide. I love the freedom, entrepreneurship, education and opportunity that America offers to me, my wife and my children. My ultimate dream is to help over 10 million of our nation's small businesses, and help them succeed through my startup oGoing!"

"I attended the "Startup America" event on May 12 at Stanford Law School. This event, organized by President Obama and the White House, provided a great forum for leaders, White House and SBA officials, entrepreneurs and community to connect and share our thoughts on growing and fostering startups and entrepreneurship in USA. I am happy to share that I was mentioned in the weekly news update by Small Business Administration - San Francisco District Office. I also submitted my idea for growing 1 million new entrepreneurs in USA." - Sanjay Dalal, CEO / Founder, Ogoing Inc., Small Business Social Network

‘Startup America’ Initiative Comes to Silicon Valley, the U.S. Startup Capital

STANFORD, CA - “Startup America,” the White House initiative to celebrate, inspire and accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship throughout the nation, made a stop in the heart of the nation?s startup capital for high tech yesterday during an afternoon event at Stanford University.

“Stanford University is a great place for the birth of companies,” said Stanford Law Professor Dan Siciliano, who welcomed 100 entre-preneurs, small business owners, business leaders and government officials to the campus during opening remarks. “The folks who started HP, Google and Yahoo, among others, all went to school here and started companies in the area. This is an exciting time and an exciting place to be right now.”

The coordinated public-private effort of “Startup America” brings together an alliance of the country?s most innovative entrepreneurs, corporations, universities, foundations and other leaders working in convert with a wide range of federal agencies to dramatically increase the prevalence and success of America?s entrepreneurs.

“America?s story has been forged in large part by entrepreneurs who have against great odds created innovative products and services that have changed the world and created millions of jobs,” said Steve Case, the founder of AOL who was appointed by President Obama to chair the “Startup America: Reducing Barriers” initiative. “Our nation once again needs to look towards these creative risk-takers to unleash the next wave of American innovation.”

SBA's Sean Greene, who heads the agency's SBIC program, moderated opening comments on the state of entrepreneurship. Panelists included Peggy Hamburg, commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration; Teresa Rea, deputy director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; Ginger Lew, a senior advisor to the National Economic Council; Canice Wu, president of Plug and Play Tech Center; and Joe Grundfest, a Stanford law professor and the former commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“Attending an event like this allows me to gain an insight into the thinking of my fellow entrepreneurs and policy makers,” said Sanjay Dalal, CEO and founder of OGoing Inc., a small business social network site. “I want to share some of my ideas with them and see what they think.”

Jose Corona, who heads the Oakland-based Inner City Advisors, said the people in attendance at the Stanford event like to shape success and meet challenges.
“Entrepreneurs focus on action,” observed Corona. “We can talk all day about problems but entrepreneurs and small business owners really want answers on fixing problems.”

Benjamin Abram, an associate with The Westly Group, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm, had praise for the government's role in business.

“Many of our nation's most innovative companies have arisen from federal programs like the SBIC,” said Abram, “and so many new jobs have been the result of those investments.”

Noted Congressman Mike Honda's deputy director in San Jose, Mike Nguyen, “We?re glad "Startup America" stopped in Silicon Valley. We want a chance to shape public policy and help the economy grow.”
